CHAPTER 8 — “The Signal”

They were told she was the best.

Evelyn—part Guardian hybrid, part psycho-empath, part chaos tornado—was known for finding people no one else could. Not through trackers or visions, but through something more invasive: emotional residue. She didn’t bother with tact. She wasn’t polite. She didn’t “feel into your field”—she ripped through it like she was looking for a lost earring in your guts.

And she was their last hope of finding Sapphire.

The Guardians had tried every conventional method. Scans. Remote viewing. Timeline pings. All failed. It was as if Sapphire had disappeared into a pocket of reality where only emotion could reach her.

But Evelyn had a theory:

“She won’t respond to Guardian energy,” she’d told Rex. “Too clean. Too advanced. What she needs to hear… is the glitch. The thing she used to love in you before you became royalty.”

That “glitch,” Evelyn believed, was somewhere inside Eve—or Lisa. Maybe both.

The after-echo of Rex—not as he is now, but as he was with them. Chaotic. Messy. Stupidly honest.

If she could draw out that sound—the frequency of the boy Rex used to be, the one Sapphire fell for—she might be able to locate her. Or at least bait her out of hiding.

It wouldn’t be comfortable.

“I’ll have to push them,” she said. “Not with logic. Not with light. With discomfort. With memory. With the exact emotional flavor that made her fall in love with him—and want to run.”

So they waited in the side room—Lisa and Eve—unsure whether they were about to be interrogated or exorcised.

And then Evelyn walked in.

EVELYN (the psychic):

So yes, of course I’ve heard about you three. Who hasn’t?

But us hybrids… we see you more as—how shall I say this politely—trailer trash who wandered into the All-Star Games and somehow won.

The story is so weird, everyone’s watching.

EVE:

Gee, Evelyn. We’re thrilled to meet you too.

LISA:

I think it’s funny. You’re kinda right, I guess.

EVE:

We are thankful to have you. So how does this work exactly?

How are we helping you find Sapphire?

EVELYN:

Okay, I’m blunt.

I’m going to poke and prod you both until you’re emotionally raw.

Think breastfeeding… and your nipples might fall off.

LISA:

Oh jeez. Are we talking “get down and dirty” here?

Just clarifying—it’s not that kind of interview, right?

EVE:

Lisa, I think you just confirmed her trailer trash theory.

EVE (to Evelyn):

So… poke and prod? Breastfeeding?

You’re gonna have to walk us through that metaphor.

EVELYN:

I mean intense. Real. Gritty.

I have to scan your fields—not just your words.

I’m looking for emotional tones I can use as bait.

Sapphire responds to frequency, not fact.

So I need your most raw, unedited selves.

EVE:

Ahh. So… emotional strip searches.

We’re familiar. Right, Lisa?

LISA:

Yeah. Though I prefer to be strip-searched by people who don’t call me trash first.

EVE:

Yeah, that’s not our foreplay kink.

EVELYN:

What is with you two? Is everything about sex?

(Eve and Lisa glance at each other, completely unfazed.)

EVE:

Yeah… we’re not sure how to answer that.

LISA (deadpan):

We’ve been through a lot.

EVELYN (sighs):

Fine. Just sit down and take off your emotional armor.

We’re diving in.

EVELYN:

Now, when was your last real fight?

Not TV drama. I mean gut-level, “we might break this thing” kind of argument. When you were with the Guardians.

EVE (thinking):

It must’ve been when I stopped going out in public.

After I was arrested and was labeled Rex’s property.

EVELYN:

So you isolated yourself. Stayed off the holodeck.

LISA:

Right. And I came home one day and told her…

Some Guardian had taken her place. Was playing “Eve.”

That’s when it exploded.

SCENE: THEIR HOME — EVENING

(flashback starts)

EVE:

So what are you saying, Lisa?

You’re kissing a Guardian?

That’s cheating. You’re cheating on me.

LISA:

What? No. It’s acting. That’s what I’m supposed to do!

EVE:

No. I’m not going there anymore. I’ve gone along with too much already.

You choosing to be nude in scenes? That was the first compromise.

Now this? I’m done, Lisa.

LISA:

What are you saying? It was fine when you were there, but not now?

EVE:

Yeah. I’m not doing a job where I’m treated like a slave.

You get that, right?

LISA:

Rex would never—

EVE (cutting her off):

How many times do I have to say it?

He has to make it look like I’m his property. That’s the law.

Gee, thanks for the empathy, Lisa.

But hey—good news. They found my replacement.

So go ahead. Let her give you everything I won’t.

Just don’t come looking for it here.

(Eve storms off and slams her bedroom door.)

LISA (quietly opens the door):

Eve… if you want me to stop acting in Guardian scenes, I will.

I don’t know how that’ll look, but I can choose it.

EVE:

Did you like kissing her?

LISA (soft):

Not really. I like kissing you better.

I wish you’d come back.

(beat)

If I played a slave girl… would you come back?

EVE (blinking):

What?

LISA:

Yeah. I’ll be your slave girl.

Rex would do that. He’s as crazy as I am.

EVE:

A slave girl? Great message for the masses, Lisa.

LISA:

Oh come on—we’re not role models.

The more we confuse them, the better.

Let ’em see how stupid it was to make you their slave just because you got mad and broke their simulator.

EVE (smirking):

Right, have you, the planet’s darling, get mad and then I treat you like a slave.

LISA:

Exactly! I’ll smash a vase or something.

You spank me in front of the entire planet. Boom. Performance art.

EVE:

Really, Lisa? You want me to spank you on a livestream?

LISA:

Softcore porn. Fully clothed. They won’t even know.

EVE:

This is exactly why I talk about boundaries.

What we do in private should stay in private.

LISA (laughing):

Hey, blame the naked levitation. That kind of ruins a girl.

Once you levitate naked there’s no turning  back.

You know like when your back’s up against the wall and your rage saves the day. Hard not to go back to that either huh?

EVE:

Oh I can’t believe you went there talking bout my rage.  Are you pressing my buttons on purpose missy.

LISA:

Wanna fight about it?

(They stare at each other, grinning.)

EVE:

Hmm. Wonder who’s gonna get spanked first.

LISA:

Mommies go first.

EVE:

Oh really?

(They lunge, wrestling on the floor, laughing, whacking each other on the butt. Breathless and tangled up when—)

REX (entering, watching):

Is this a sport in your world?

I like it.

(They freeze, then burst out laughing.)

EVE (getting up, breathing hard):

Good. ’Cause I just made her my bitch.

Which means she’s my slave tomorrow. On set. Right, Lisa?

LISA:

Yup. She won. I’m her bitch now.

EVELYN:

You two don’t come up with anything that makes logical sense.

It’s just chaos… and this pulsing energy.

Eve, your IQ is actually quite high—for a human.

I can’t believe you just play along with this.

EVE (deadpan):

I wouldn’t underestimate Lisa’s IQ.

It lies hidden in her quite lovely butt.

That’s what I know.

LISA (grinning):

Yeah. She feeds me snippets of her rage,

mixed with her thoughtful maternal intelligence—

always through her hands.

EVELYN (tilting her head):

And then it gets reorganized… and it can get totally upgraded.

We know this practice already.

Humans have a version of it, but there’s a secret sauce between you two.

EVE:

Yes, we know.

It’s hiding in low-brow soft porn, trailer-trash antics,

and yet… it gives us an advantage.

LISA (mock whisper):

I don’t know why you’re giving away all our secrets.

EVE (smirking):

Sorry, Miss Teenage Trailer Queen of the Year.

EVELYN (sitting back):

This has become a craft between you two.

EVE (with a slow nod):

Uh huh. I’d say so.

We met our match in each other—

and there’s always fireworks.

INT. PRIVATE CHAMBER – EVENING

EVELYN stands, arms folded, staring at Eve and Lisa across a low-lit room humming with subtle resonance tech.

EVELYN

So… Eve.

You decided not to carry out the spanking scene the next day. Why?

(Eve and Lisa glance at each other—too quickly.)

LISA

We did carry it out.

Eve was spectacular. I was… gone after.

EVE

She lost consciousness. Again.

This time she was out for hours.

It was… odd.

LISA

The footage existed.

They could’ve aired it—should’ve.

But somebody upstairs pulled it. It vanished. Boxed.

Never aired, never archived.

EVE

Rex doesn’t know what happened to it either.

EVELYN (smiling slightly)

I think it’s key.

Actually, I can download it—from each of your memories. Rex’s too.

And I can track where Lisa went during those missing hours.

(Eve folds her arms. She’s rattled—but curious.)

EVE

Okay then.

Give us your best theory.

Why was it stolen?

EVELYN (to Lisa, lightly)

You said Eve was spectacular.

So what was different that day, Eve?

EVE (after a long beat)

Nothing.

Except that… I know what it’s like to be humiliated in front of the whole world.

To be punished by powers you can’t challenge.

To turn that Greek tragedy into sexual bliss?

I was down for it.

(pause)

But I had to stay grounded.

Had to be her mother, her guide—even while punishing her.

Because I knew she’d feel it all.

And she’d transmute it. Into something holy.

Into bliss.

LISA (quietly, almost reverent)

And I did.

EVE (to Evelyn)

But come on. This is Kink 101. Why erase it?

EVELYN (stone cold)

Because the gig was up.

You couldn’t hide behind your kinks anymore.

LISA (sharp)

What gig?

What exactly are we hiding?

EVELYN (dry)

Oh please.

You haven’t asked the Oracle that question?

(Lisa and Eve exchange a long, loaded look.)

EVE (exhale, weary but amused)

What the hell.

So you all know the Oracle too.

INT. SAFEHOUSE – EVENING

The door swings open. Eve and Lisa stumble in, visibly drained. Artimus is already inside, just hanging his coat. Cherry emerges from the reading den, cradling a cup of something herbal. The scent of warm food fills the space.

EVE

Hey guys. Dinner smells amazing. Thank you so much.

LISA

We’re both wrecked. We’ve been poked, prodded, scanned, and borderline psychoanalyzed.

All before lunch.

BRAD (grinning)

Well come on then—plates are warm. Let’s eat before we debrief the day.

ARTIMUS

Yeah, thanks to you three. Big help. Really.

They all settle around the table. The mood softens as everyone finds a seat.

EVE (to Ling)

Ling, it’s so nice to finally meet you.

Brad’s been telling us all about you. He actually kept his promise—texted us every day while we were in Gardenia.

ARTIMUS (mock wounded)

I did too, by the way.

EVE (smiling gently)

I know, honey.

LISA (to Ling)

I hear you’re a Chan master?

Good to know someone’s capable of taking Brad down if he gets out of line.

ARTIMUS

Oh yeah.

He needed it. Still does, honestly.

EVE

Well, Ling… he does look more housebroken.

So thank you for that.

And we heard you and Cherry are working on a book?

LING

Yeah. That’s actually how I met Brad.

It’s about a hybrid Guardian race—pre-Gardenia cycle.

CHERRY (perking up)

And speaking of hybrids…

Any news on Sapphire?

BRAD

Yeah. What’d you two dig up today?

(Lisa and Eve exchange a long look.)

EVE

Well, family… turns out the Guardians?

They know the Oracle too.

CHERRY (eyes wide)

What? Oh my god—that actually makes total sense.

LISA

Wait—why, Cherry?

EVE

Yeah, hon. Spill.

CHERRY

The Galactic Federation would be open to helping anyone.

Why not Guardians too?

Some of them must be able to connect, same as humans. I mean… if I can—

EVE (leaning in, surprised)

Wait… you do connect?

CHERRY (nodding softly)

Yes. I always have. It’s just… quieter for me.

(Everyone at the table smiles—some surprised, others deeply moved.)

EVE

That Oracle. She does get around.

LISA

Ling… what about you? Do you know her too?

LING (with monk-like calm)

Yes. Her. And many others.

(The trio—Eve, Lisa, and Artimus—trade a quick, loaded look. The unspoken question hangs in the air: What the hell else is Ling plugged into?)

ARTIMUS (lifting his glass)

Well… here’s to two trios.

(He glances meaningfully at both groups.)

ARTIMUS (cont’d)

May we bring more good…

And do no harm.

ALL (softly, together)

Cheers.

They clink glasses. The room glows with something rare:

Safety, alignment… and the low hum of destiny getting warmer.

– LIVING ROOM – NIGHT

They are finishing up cleaning after the dinner with Cherry Ling and Brad. The last of the dishes are drying. Lisa is putting away a plate. Eve sits curled up at the end of the couch, looking distant. Artimus stands near the window, arms folded, silent.

Artimus

(sighing)

Well… I’m wiped. I think I’m going to head to bed.

Eve doesn’t look up. She speaks low but clear.

Eve

Do I always have to be the one who says it out loud?

No one answers.

Eve

What’s wrong, Artimus? We haven’t slept together since we came back. You think I don’t feel it?

Artimus

(voice quiet, restrained)

I don’t know how I feel. I need time I guess.

Eve

(her voice cracks)

I left Rex. I left all of that because I chose you. Because I couldn’t keep pretending. It was breaking me.

Artimus

(meeting her eyes)

I know you, Eve. And I know you wouldn’t have slept with him… unless some part of you wanted to.

A long beat. Eve blinks hard, jaw tightening to hold back tears.

Eve

(voice raw)

So that’s it? I’m damaged goods now?

*Artimus doesn’t answer. He looks away,

Eve stands abruptly. She wipes her cheek with the back of her hand.*

Eve

Fine.

She walks to the guest room, and the door shuts with a soft but final click.

Lisa watches her go. Then she turns to Artimus, her voice quiet but unwavering.

Lisa

I know how you feel.

(Artimus doesn’t look at her)

Artimus

What did you do about it?

Lisa

I went to her.

She crosses to him, resting her hand lightly over his heart.

Lisa

She’s the only one who can fix it. You know that. She will fix it.

Artimus stands there, breathing unevenly.

INT. GUEST ROOM – NIGHT

Eve lies curled on the bed, still facing the wall. The door opens softly. She doesn’t move.

Artimus enters, quiet and heavy. He sits on the edge of the bed, breath uneven.

ARTIMUS

(voice cracking)

I need you.

I’ve always needed you.

Since we were kids.

(The vulnerability in his voice shatters something in her. She turns immediately and takes him into her arms.)

EVE

(shushing, gentle)

Shhh… I know. I know…

(She cradles his head, fingers in his hair. He holds onto her like it’s the only thing keeping him grounded. She cups his face, searching his eyes.)

EVE (softly)

And I need you.

That’s why I’m here.

Always and forever.

(She kisses him—deeply, slowly. Not rushed. Not hungry. Just real. The kind of kiss that reaches the part of him that’s stayed untouched all this time. He breathes into her, trembling slightly.)

(Then he begins to undo her blouse, careful but needing to feel her. She lets him. Her breath softens as his hands touch her skin—the reverence in his touch melting every guard she didn’t know she still held.)

(They undress each other slowly, like remembering a language they both knew in another life. When they make love, it’s full-bodied, full-hearted. He kisses every inch of her. She whispers things to him she doesn’t even know she’s saying.)

INT. MAIN BEDROOM –

Lisa lies under the covers, already awake, a calm smile on her face. She hears them enter.

Eve and Artimus walk in, glowing, gentle, arms around each other like teenagers caught in bliss.

Lisa sees them and smiles—warm and knowing.

LISA

(smiling wide)

Oh… I’m about to get ravished, aren’t I?

(They all laugh softly as Eve crawls into bed beside her, followed by Artimus. The weight of the past finally slipping off their shoulders. The trio realigned. Home again.)

EVE & THE ORACLE – INT. ORACLE’S SANCTUARY

The glow is soft this morning. Gentle blues and golds, like light coming through memory.

The Oracle appears mid-hover, already amused.

ORACLE

Well… I’m glad I made the list.

Of important people.

EVE

You’re like family, Oracle.

It’s just…

we didn’t know you were spreading yourself around so much.

(She winks. The Oracle grins.)

ORACLE

But you’re okay with it now.

I’m not damaged goods?

EVE

No.

Quite the opposite.

(A stillness. A recognition of what’s finally being said out loud.)

ORACLE

So. You have questions.

EVE

I guess the obvious one:

What is this secret sauce hidden in all this joyous chaos?

The G-rated term, at least.

(beat)

And… did you put it there?

ORACLE

It was agreed upon that you’d carry it.

You were asked.

And you said yes.

As for the… cloaking technique?

That’s just your own creative genius.

EVE

Evelyn’s hunting for it. She thinks it’ll help us find Sapphire.

Why didn’t you just tell her what it is?

Why not tell us where Sapphire is?

ORACLE (softly amused)

Whoa. That’s a lot.

The sauce is yours to speak on, if you want.

Yes—it can connect you to Sapphire.

I hope it will.

But you know how these things go.

Free will. Choice. Timing.

Evelyn’s gifted.

She’s not wrong—what you two carry is a signal.

ORACLE (cont’d)

You remember how you felt when Lisa asked you to leave Ben?

Your mind said it would be suicide. For all three of you.

On paper—it would’ve been.

So what made you say yes?

(Long pause. Eve’s eyes flicker. Something ancient stirs.)

EVE (quietly)

The secret sauce.

It’s been with me all my life.

(beat)

But why didn’t I stand up to Ben sooner?

ORACLE

You know.

EVE

It wasn’t time.

ORACLE (smiling)

I have to say…

you’re starting to see more.

LISA & THE ORACLE – LATER THAT MORNING

The sanctuary shifts. The glow now has a mischievous blush to it. Lisa’s energy precedes her—as usual.

LISA

Okay. Straight up.

Why did the Guardians box our secret sauce soft porn extravaganza?

ORACLE

You really enjoy that memory, don’t you?

You better balance yourself now.

No more spankings for a while?

LISA (mock-serious)

I feel better balanced, so yes.

(beat)

But I can’t stop Eve from—

ORACLE

She always does her little things.

But she goes along with your bigger things.

Because she loves you.

LISA (smirking)

Not wrong.

But seriously. Why did they box it?

ORACLE (gentle)

Some people in power aren’t ready for too much change.

But most people are.

That scene? That energy?

It would’ve stirred something real.

The secret sauce leads people to care more.

Look what it did for Rex. Rex and Eve . are leaders. And if Rex and Sappire are leaders. It would do even more.

INT. EVELYN’S LAB – NIGHT

The lab glows with ambient blue light. Cables and crystalline devices hum quietly. Eve and Lisa sit side by side in sleek reclining chairs, Evelyn standing over them holding a pair of translucent goggles in each hand. A monitor behind her flickers with incomprehensible glyphs and fractal patterns.

Evelyn

(speaking evenly)

Alright. I was able to download exactly where Lisa went after she passed out for those hours.

Eve shifts, skeptical but curious.

Eve

And you’re sure you can actually show us this? Like… project it?

Evelyn

Dead sure. I’m going to let you both see it. But prepare yourselves—Lisa went to an alternate reality that shows your story. It’s you, but… a different timeline.

Lisa’s eyes light up. She leans forward in her seat.

Lisa

Hell yes. We get to watch another version of us? Who gets to do that? This is exciting.

Eve rolls her eyes but can’t help smiling faintly.

Eve

So you were able to… what? Download her entire experience when she was unconscious?

Evelyn

That’s right. Every impression. Every feeling. All encoded.

(beat)

I don’t have all day. Are you ready?

She holds out the goggles, one eyebrow raised.

Evelyn

You want popcorn with this or what?

Lisa

(grinning)

No—we’re good. Just start it.

Eve sighs, takes a goggle set, and glances sideways at Lisa.

Eve

If you start narrating over this like it’s your personal movie, I’m taking them off.

Lisa

(smug)

We’ll see.

Evelyn smirks, sliding the goggles into their hands.

Evelyn

Alright. Buckle up. You’re about to see everything.

They put the goggles on in unison as Evelyn taps a console. A pulse of energy hums through the room. The lights fade out, and a new reality flickers to life in their vision.

Ben stands by the window, backlit, rifling through a thick dossier. Eve studies a tablet displaying Lisa’s biometric data, eyes intent, unflinching. Artimus lounges in a chair, both feet propped on the armrest, spinning a pen idly—like he might bolt or combust at any moment.

Ben

(reading, not looking up)

You’ve seen her resonance charts? Full-spectrum disturbances—not just parasympathetic. Theta spikes off the grid. She may be an unregistered transmitter. Possibly transitional.

Artimus

Lisa Snow.

(thoughtful, half-smiling)

I think I saw her once.

Eve

And….

(Wondering what she might look like?)

(glances at the charts, intrigued)

She’s different from the others. I can’t believe it. So she fainted—and you were able to hook her up without her knowing?

Artimus

She was at that…light language extravaganza Thursday night.

Ben

(flat)

We had someone following her.

Artimus

(leaning back, smirking)

I would’ve liked to be a fly on the wall that night.

Eve

(raising an eyebrow)

Interesting she’d even go there in the first place. Not your run-of-the-mill college student.

Artimus

(sincere, almost soft)

She’s unique.

Eve

Oh yeah?

Ben looks up, eyes sharpening on Artimus—like he’s measuring exactly how much trouble that fascination could cause.

Ben

All right. She fainted and was put back in her dorm room. I’m confident she doesn’t know we captured the readings before she came to.

(glancing at Artimus)

To be clear—she was flagged in one of your classes. The one you never attend.

Eve

(not missing a beat)

You noticed anomalies from the class?

(shakes her head, dry)

Personally—I’ve always said Artimus is too smart to be in any of those classes. It looks…odd.

Ben

We have cameras and field equipment active during their acting exercises. It was enough to detect her pattern.

Artimus

(smiling faintly)

So—back to Lisa Snow.

(voice low)

She is…something, isn’t she.

Eve glances at him, skeptical. Ben’s gaze flicks to Artimus with something colder—like he’s considering whether the young man is becoming a liability.

Ben

(curt)

All right. I want you two on this. We need her scanned—and we need her complicit. She might be worth the trouble.

(pauses, deliberate)

Drop everything. Make it happen.

(turns to Artimus)

You know her. You two work out a plan.

He snaps the dossier closed, signaling the meeting’s end. Eve turns to leave, but Ben speaks—voice low, smooth—just for her.

Ben

(careful, quiet)

Eve a word with you.

Eve stops. Waits. His tone softens, just enough to be unsettling.

Ben

Artimus…needs to be calmed. More stable.

(eyes narrowing with something too close to personal)

I’m counting on you to help with that.

Eve doesn’t flinch, but there’s a flicker in her expression—she knows the subtext. That she’s being tasked to manage more than a mission.

Eve exits and sees Artimus silent—each aware of the unspoken: that the past, and their entanglements, are never really passed

Eve:

What’s going on with you, Artimus? Are you okay?

Artimus just looks out the window.

Artimus:

Eve leans over, kisses him gently on the cheek, and whispers:

Eve (whispering):

The car’s probably bugged. Let’s go for a walk.

Park – Artimus and Eve walking

Eve:

You’re different. What’s he been asking you to do, Artimus?

Artimus:

I love the science behind it. But the way he just… takes everything for himself? It’s wrong.

Eve:

He’s been doing that forever.

(beat)

There’s something else you’re not telling me.

Artimus:

We’re getting closer.

Eve:

You mean we could actually create a portal?

Artimus:

If she’s the one that matches us… then yeah. This is going to happen.

(He shakes his head, worry tightening his face.)

Eve:

If it’s not him, it’d be some other asshole who ends up controlling it.

Artimus:

What do you think is the right thing to do?

Eve:

Does it matter what’s the “right” thing? He holds all the cards—unless we do something like… murder.

Artimus:

So you have thought about it.

Eve:

Murder feels like the wrong thing.

(pause)

If we go along with this and see where it goes… maybe there will be a day when we can do something we feel is right. Until then, we just coast. And observe.

Artimus:

Coast.

(smiles faintly)

Sounds nice.

(he looks away)

But this portal technology is stressing me out.

Eve:

I know. Way more for you than for me—because you’re close to it.

Artimus:

I could stop it now. I could scramble everything.

Eve:

But that’s suicide for you. And some other schmuck would just pick it back up.

(beat)

It might be false hope anyway. Let’s see for ourselves if this Lisa is the chosen one.

(She smiles.)

Lisa Snow, huh? You’ve seen her?

Artimus:

Yeah. She’s different. I could tell right away.

Eve:

Then let’s make a plan.

(smiling, resolute)

I wanna meet this chick.

Scene – Exterior: Coffee Shop Parking Lot – Early Evening

Eve sits by the window, her coffee growing cold. She watches Lisa at a corner table—studying, headphones in—until she notices Lisa looking past the glass.

In the parking lot, an obviously mentally ill man paces, gesturing wildly, speaking to anyone who will listen.

Two uniformed attendants emerge from a van across the lot, talking into radios. Eve’s stomach tightens. She’s seen this before. “Help” is never what it seems.

Lisa stands up, gathering her things without hurry. She walks straight out the door, past Eve.

Eve blinks. Then follows.

Exterior – Parking Lot

Lisa (calmly, to the man):

Show me where you sleep. I’ll take you there. Come on—we’ll get you a room.

Man (voice urgent, eyes wide):

They’re creating things that should be left alone. We’re not ready for this technology.

Eve steps closer, pretending she just arrived.

Eve:

There will be someone coming to take him. I’m sure they’ll help him.

Lisa:

Do you have a car?

Eve:

Yeah.

Lisa (eyes unwavering):

Then let’s take him to a room. We have to do it now—before they get here.

Eve:

Why would you do that? He obviously needs help.

Lisa (steady, a little eerie):

I don’t think it’s help he’ll be getting.

Eve:

Who told you that?

Lisa (locks eyes, dead serious):

A bird told me.

(beat)

We don’t have time. You’re either going to get your car now or you’re not.

Eve stares back, feeling something shift inside her.

Eve:

Okay. It’s right over there. Green sedan.

Lisa (nodding once):

Nice.

(to the man)

Come on. We need to go now.

The man follows her without hesitation. Lisa climbs in the back with him. Eve hesitates, then gets behind the wheel and drives.

Interior – Motel Room – Later

Lisa helps the man into the bathroom, showing him the shower controls, speaking softly like she’s known him for years.

Eve lingers in the doorway, watching her.

Eve:

I can go get him some things. A shaving kit, clean clothes—whatever.

Lisa (glancing back, surprised):

You’d do that?

Eve (gives a small, disarming smile):

Yeah. Why do you ask? Why not help someone today?

Lisa (studying her):

It just seems…peculiar.

Eve:

If I’m peculiar, what does that make you?

Lisa (a flicker of humor):

Oh, I’m totally mad. I admit it.

Eve:

Well—if you can admit it, maybe that means you’re sane after all.

Their eyes lock—something charged but unspoken passes between them.

Lisa (softer):

You’re right. I’m sane.

Eve looks her over like she’s trying to solve a puzzle.

Eve:

So…come on. Let’s go get this guy some supplies. You need anything? Planning to shower in there with him?

Lisa (dry):

Maybe.

Eve:

Ah—well. Hope there’s a movie channel.

Lisa:

Let’s get a pizza.

Eve:

Sounds like a plan.

They stand there for a moment, the air between them neither hostile nor friendly—just new.

Eve (extending her hand):

I’m Eve, by the way.

Lisa (taking it):

Lisa.

Interior – Motel Room – Night

Allen sits on the edge of the bed in fresh clothes, hair damp from his shower. He takes the last bite of pizza from the paper plate Eve set in front of him.

Lisa finishes shaving the back of his neck, wiping the blade on a towel.

Eve (to Lisa, holding up a bottle):

You want another water?

Lisa (glancing down at her own rumpled clothes):

I don’t even have anything clean to wear. I can’t stay here.

Eve:

I can take you home. Is it close?

Lisa:

I live at the college.

Eve (raising her eyebrows, teasing):

Oh—a college girl.

Lisa:

How about you? Are you in college?

Eve:

No. I work near the campus.

Lisa:

Oh yeah? What do you do?

Eve:

I’m a doctor.

Lisa (looking her over, surprised):

You look younger than me.

Eve:

I know. I get that a lot. I’m twenty-five—and a doctor.

Lisa:

Wow. I never would’ve guessed that.

Eve:

I came here because I specialize in treating people who… have problems fainting. There have been a lot of cases in this area lately.

Lisa:

Why do they faint?

Eve:

That’s what I’m working on.

Lisa:

I fainted the other night.

Eve (startled):

What—no. That’s a coincidence. How many times has it happened?

Lisa:

Just once.

Eve looks her over, her professional composure flickering with something more personal.

Eve:

You want to talk about it over dinner? My treat.

Lisa (watching her carefully):

Wait… is this like… a date?

Eve (smirking, shrugging):

Oh—how’d you know I’d be into dating women?

Lisa:

You’re good at flirting. You know that?

Eve:

Thanks. I guess you felt me checking you out, huh?

Lisa:

So you said you’re new in town—just here for the fainting epidemic?

Eve:

That’s right.

(she softens)

Are you against just… having some fun? Nothing too serious. Who knows—I might be here a while.

Lisa:

That’s quite an offer.

Eve (heading for the door, tone light but a little guarded):

It’s okay if you’re not into it.

Lisa takes a slow breath, as if weighing whether to let herself cross a line.

Lisa:

Did you… feel me checking you out?

Eve turns, one hand still on the doorknob. For a moment, she looks almost shy.

Eve:

I thought I did. Maybe I was wrong.

Lisa:

No. You weren’t wrong.

They stand in the hush that follows, the air heavy with something undeniable.

Eve (gently):

Shall we move on to dinner, then?

Lisa nods, a flush rising to her cheeks. They both turn back to Allen, who watches them with a weary, knowing look.

Allen:

You two… are a powerful connection. Explosive.

Lisa lets out a shaky little laugh, then bends to take Allen’s hand.

Lisa:

Get some rest, okay?

Allen just smiles, already drifting toward sleep.

Eve holds the door open, her eyes never leaving Lisa as she steps into the night.

Scene: Restaurant Booth, Earlier That Evening

Lisa and Eve sit across from each other, sharing a pizza and drinks.

Lisa:

My mouth always seemed to get me into trouble. How about you?

Eve:

I guess I was a good girl in school. But you know…trouble just followed me anyway. Never a dull moment.

Eve’s voice trails off, and her expression shifts—something sad flickering behind her eyes.

Lisa (gently):

Eve…are you okay?

Eve:

Yeah. Sorry. You were saying you questioned the nuns one year…

Lisa (soft):

My mom and dad died in the war. I came to college to try to get over it, move on. I had an experience downtown. I’ll explain it to you sometime. But since then…I feel better after fainting. I’m sure.

Eve (interrupts):

Lisa…I’m sorry about your parents.

There’s a long pause.

Lisa:

I’m sorry about…whatever that was you were talking about.

Eve (sad smile):

Is it that obvious? I didn’t say much.

Lisa (meeting her eyes):

What you said was fine. I felt it.

Eve looks down at her drink, then back up.

Eve:

I have to make a phone call. You know—doctor stuff. Excuse me.

Bathroom – Eve on the Phone

(Eve has stepped away from the table, standing in the quiet of the bathroom, the low hum of the ventilation fan filling the silence.)

Eve (low, urgent):

I can’t do this. I’m pulling out.

Artimus (over the phone):

What? You had her—putty in your hands, love. I’ll be there in two seconds.

Eve:

No. I want you to let her be.

(She waits—nothing but silence.)

Eve:

Hello?

(He doesn’t answer. She exhales shakily and hangs up.)

Scene: Bar, Night

Lisa finishes racking the pool balls. Eve leans against the wall, arms folded, studying her with that amused, assessing look.

Eve (teasing):

Pool player, huh?

Lisa (grinning):

Not a shark. Maybe a…minnow with good aim.

Eve:

A dangerous minnow. I see. Should I trust you?

Lisa:

Probably not. But you can try.

Eve:

Let me get you a drink—maybe that’ll even the odds.

Lisa:

I don’t know. Liquor makes me unstoppable. But…if you’re buying, I’ll have a Sex on the Beach.

Eve (laughs):

Of course you will.

Eve heads to the bar. When she comes back with their drinks, she spots two guys watching Lisa bend over to line up her shot, their eyes lingering a little too long. Artimus steps in just then, scanning the room with casual authority.

Artimus (light, friendly):

How about doubles? You two—and you—want to be my partner?

He gestures to one of the gawking guys.

John:

Yeah, sure. You here with anyone? (He looks right at Lisa.)

Eve (smooth but pointed):

She’s with me.

Artimus (acting surprised):

Hi. Artimus.

They all shake hands.

Artimus (to Eve, feigning curiosity):

Doctor Eve, right? Pretty sure you scanned me when I fainted.

Eve (smiling sweetly):

Of course. Though I wasn’t going to out you in public. Confidentiality and all that.

Artimus (shrugs):

I don’t mind.

Lisa (eyeing them both):

What scan?

John (grinning):

Oh, we’ve got a story.

Artimus:

She uses this fancy resonance scanner—makes you strip down, checks your field.

Eve:

It measures energy signatures. And a few other things.

Lisa:

All your clothes?

Artimus (deadpan):

Every stitch.

John:

I wouldn’t mind that.

Eve (drily):

I’m sure you wouldn’t.

Lisa laughs and takes her shot, sinking two balls.

Lisa (winking):

I told you—unstoppable.

Eve (smiling, but with that edge):

We’ll see. Maybe I’ll have to…distract you.

The game gets underway. Artimus nearly clears the table, but Lisa holds her own, leaning over the felt with practiced confidence. Every time she lines up a shot, Eve’s eyes drift down her back—more protective than she means to be.

When Lisa finally misses, Eve moves closer, her voice low.

Eve:

Nice form. Though…you were showing off a bit.

Lisa (smirking):

You were watching that closely?

Eve (softly):

I watch everything about you.

Lisa’s smile falters—just for a second—like she feels it too.

They finish the game. Artimus sinks the eight ball with a flourish.

Artimus:

And that, my friends, is the game.

Lisa (laughing):

You’re not supposed to be that good.

Artimus:

It’s my only real skill. Don’t tell anyone.

Eve steps closer to Lisa, resting her hand lightly on her lower back.

Eve (quietly):

Ready to get out of here?

Lisa (soft, tipsy smile):

Yeah. I think I am.

Eve throws Artimus a look that says don’t follow, and he just shrugs, holding up his hands in surrender.

Scene: Eve’s car, driving through the quiet streets

The neon lights fade behind them as they head toward campus. The silence feels charged—Lisa is leaning her head back against the seat, watching Eve in profile.

Lisa (a little buzzed):

So…are you going to want to scan me?

Eve (half teasing, half sincere):

Not on the first date.

Lisa (laughs):

You’re sure? I’m a little curious now.

Eve:

I can scan you if you want. It’s completely professional. But you do have to undress, and I have to record both sides of your field.

Lisa (playful):

Scandalous.

Eve:

Since we’re…dating, I could have the other doctor do it.

Lisa (immediate):

No. I’d want you.

Eve glances over, catches the earnest look in Lisa’s eyes. It softens her.

Eve (gently):

We’ll talk about it later. You’re a little buzzed.

They pull up outside Lisa’s dorm. Eve gets out first and comes around to open the door. She offers her hand. Lisa takes it.

Scene: Dorm entrance

They climb the steps slowly, Eve’s hand on the small of Lisa’s back.

At the door, Lisa hesitates, keys in her hand.

Lisa (quiet):

I had a really good time.

Eve (just above a whisper):

Me too.

Eve slides her arms around Lisa’s waist, pulls her close, and kisses her—warm, unhurried, just long enough to leave them both a little breathless.

Lisa leans her forehead against Eve’s.

Lisa (smiling):

Good night…Doctor Eve.

Eve (smiling back):

Good night, Lisa Snow.

Lisa slips inside and closes the door softly.

Scene: Eve’s car, parked outside

Eve picks up her phone.

Artimus (answering):

Well?

Eve:

I told you—I’m not sleeping with her.

Artimus (mock scandal):

Did you at least kiss her?

Eve:

It was a date. She deserved a little kiss.

Artimus:

And…did you, you know…

Eve (exasperated):

Good night, Artimus.

She hangs up, leans her head back against the headrest, and closes her eyes, just breathing her in.

Theta House – Courtyard

Anna (calling out): There’s a girl here to see you. She says you know her. Her name’s Lisa.

Artimus (startled): What?

He walks out. Lisa is waiting in a leather jacket and sunglasses, her expression unreadable.

Artimus: Hi. How did you find me?

Lisa: You said pool was all you were good at.

Artimus (smirking): Maybe I’m irresistible to women too.

Lisa: That—and these studies you’re doing. (She tosses a folder onto the table.) Sounds a lot like Eve.

Artimus (eyeing the folder): Well, I said I was scanned. I couldn’t just blow my whole wad at once, could I?

Lisa: You…or Eve?

Artimus: She’s a doctor. She can’t say anything about me.

Lisa: Fair. But why would you just happen to show up that night?

Artimus (sighing): Alright. You caught me. I was following Eve. Call it…a crush.

Lisa: Then why did I get the feeling you were scamming on me?

Artimus: Everyone was scamming on you, love—including Eve.

A beat of silence.

Artimus (leaning forward): So where’s this going?

Lisa: You tell me. Am I about to get scanned…scammed…or both?

Artimus (smile curling): Once you get scanned, you never go back.

He studies her carefully, lowering his voice.

Artimus: Why don’t we help each other? I want Eve. You want…something. I can give you information if that’s what you’re after. Let’s approach Eve together next time. See where this rabbit hole goes.

Scene: Back at the coffee shop where Eve first noticed Lisa.

Eve pushes open the glass door, spotting Lisa and Artimus in a corner booth. They’re sitting close—too close. Lisa has one arm stretched along the back of the seat, leaning in as Artimus says something in a low voice. Lisa laughs, tipping her chin toward him, eyes bright.

Eve hesitates in the doorway. For a second, she considers leaving. Instead, she crosses the room, her steps measured.

Eve (coolly): Funny running into you two.

Lisa looks up, a flicker of surprise in her eyes, but she recovers quickly.

Lisa: Oh—hey. We were just…talking about research.

Artimus leans back, casual, but Eve can read him better than anyone. He’s running the same script he’s used on a dozen marks. She feels something twist in her chest.

Artimus: Just catching up. You left so suddenly the other night.

Eve (tight smile): Did I interrupt something?

Lisa (shrugging): Depends. Are you here to join us, or to warn me about something?

Eve shifts her gaze to Artimus.

Eve: Can we talk? Alone?

Lisa watches them, her expression unreadable as Artimus rises. He gives Lisa a conspiratorial wink.

Artimus: Be right back, love.

They step outside into the fading light. Eve rounds on him immediately.

Eve (low voice): What are you doing?

Artimus (innocent): Talking. She’s curious. You said you were out.

Eve: I changed my mind.

Artimus: Oh? Is that jealousy, or are you finally admitting she’s important?

Eve: She doesn’t need to be your experiment.

Artimus’s smile fades.

Artimus: Then maybe you shouldn’t have walked away.

A tense beat. Eve looks back through the glass—Lisa is watching them calmly, her fingertips drumming the table.

Eve: Stay away from her tonight.

Artimus (dry): You sure you want that? Because if you don’t move, someone else will.

Eve doesn’t answer. She goes back inside. Lisa watches her approach.

Lisa: Everything okay?

Eve forces a smile.

Eve: Yeah. Mind if I join you?

Lisa: Sure.

Artimus (smirking): I’ll be right back. Gotta piss.

He saunters off. Eve watches him go, then turns to Lisa, her voice low.

Eve: I thought we were…kind of becoming something.

She reaches out, touches Lisa’s hand gently.

Eve (softer): I guess that kiss meant more to me than it did to you.

Lisa (lifting an eyebrow): Maybe I just need another sample.

Eve: I was going slow. I had plans to see where this went.

Lisa: I thought we agreed it was going to be a short fling.

Eve: Yeah. I did say that. But after last night…

Lisa (cutting her off): Oh, please—you’re slipping. Why don’t you just tell me why Artimus is all up in my business now?

Eve (voice rising): Listen. I was taking my time because of what you told me about your parents. Maybe you don’t need a fling right now.

Her intensity lands. Lisa holds her gaze, unflinching.

Lisa (quiet): That’s up to me.

There’s a long charged pause.

Eve: Well…who’s it going to be, Lisa? Me or Artimus? I don’t like games, and I like you. If it’s Artimus, say the word and I’m gone.

Lisa (challenging): You don’t like games.

Eve (immediately, sharper): I really don’t.

Lisa (leaning in, her voice steady): You want to scan me, Eve? How about that? Is that what this is?

Eve: What did Artimus tell you?

Before Lisa can answer, Artimus reappears, casual as ever.

Artimus: Hey—want another round?

Eve stands abruptly, her chair scraping back.

Eve: No. You two go ahead.

She looks at Lisa, her eyes searching, then at Artimus, her expression hardening.

Eve (to Lisa): You don’t call me.

Then she’s gone, out the door without looking back.

Lisa appears stunned, her eyes fixed on the door where Eve disappeared.

Artimus (whistling low): Whoa. You are getting the top-of-the-line fireworks. I told you she was something.

Lisa (still in shock): She was hurt.

She turns to him slowly, voice tightening.

Lisa: There’s something you’re not saying, Artimus. There’s something very wrong here.

She grabs her jacket off the chair.

Lisa: Contact me when you actually want to talk.

Without waiting for a reply, she strides out. Artimus watches her go, his grin fading. He rubs a hand over his mouth, suddenly not feeling so clever.

Outside, Lisa moves quickly, almost running. A block away, she reaches the bus station and sinks onto a bench, her hands trembling.

Across the street, Eve stands partly hidden behind a parked car. She watches Lisa from the shadows, her own expression wrecked with regret.

In that moment—separately, silently—both Eve and Artimus feel like scumbags.

EXT. BUS STATION – NIGHT

Lisa sits slumped on the bench, trying to breathe. She blinks up at the harsh sodium lights.

Lisa (whispering to herself): Get it together. Just get home.

She pushes herself upright, but her knees buckle. The world tilts and spins.

Lisa: No—

She crumples to the pavement.

A bystander yells for help.

BYSTANDER: Somebody call 911!

A small crowd gathers. The paramedics arrive within minutes, assessing her vitals.

Artimus, still outside the bar, sees the flashing ambulance lights and breaks into a run.

Artimus (to the medic): What happened?

PARAMEDIC: You know her?

Artimus: Yes—she’s with me.

Eve stands down the block in the dark, frozen, unable to look away.

INT. HOSPITAL ROOM – NIGHT

Lisa lies awake in the bed, looking pale but alert. The monitor softly beeps.

NURSE

The doctor is here. She specializes in fainting spells.

LISA

Young doctor?

NURSE (smiling)

How did you know?

Eve walks in slowly, her white coat crisp and formal. Her expression is unreadable.

EVE

I need to talk with her privately.

The nurse nods and steps out.

EVE

Okay, girly. Can you sit up for me? Let me take a look.

Eve checks her pupils with a small penlight, then her pulse, her movements precise.

EVE (professional)

Lisa, I want to do the scan. There’s a chance I can help you—but I need your consent.

LISA

Okay.

Eve steps out. The nurse returns with a clipboard and hands Lisa a consent form. Lisa signs. The nurse draws the curtains around the bed for privacy.

Ten minutes later, Eve comes back in, her face calm but her hands faintly trembling.

EVE

This shouldn’t take long. Let me help you.

Lisa stands. Eve gently removes the paper gown from her shoulders. She lifts what looks like a slender tricorder and a silver tuning fork.

Eve passes the scanner slowly over Lisa’s front, watching the display.

EVE

Good job. Okay—turn around for me.

Lisa turns. Eve scans her back. Her voice softens.

EVE

I see you’ve got two tattoos. Hmm. Me too. I like getting them.

She lowers the scanner to the curve of Lisa’s lower back. Suddenly, the overhead lights flicker—the monitor beeps wildly, and the power cuts out.

LISA

What happened? The power—

EVE

Don’t worry. It’ll come back. We’ve got backup.

The emergency lights flicker on. Eve finishes the scan.

EVE

All done. You can sit back down.

Lisa sits, clutching the sheet around her.

EVE

Tell me exactly what happened both times you fainted.

Lisa takes a breath, recounting her experiences, her voice shaky.

When she finishes, Eve is silent a long moment.

EVE (quietly)

And I’m sorry things were…compromised before this. I truly didn’t know it would happen this way.

LISA

What do you mean?

EVE

I mean the date. That’s not how it should’ve gone. I’m sorry for my part in that.

LISA

Thanks for being professional with me.

EVE

Of course. I have other patients tonight.

LISA

Eve.

Eve pauses at the curtain.

LISA

I know there’s something going on. I really hurt you—and I’m sorry.

EVE

That was me being too intense. You didn’t feel the same. That’s just dating, right? It’s okay.

LISA

I like you. That’s the truth. But there’s something you and Artimus are involved in that I don’t understand. You were intense for another reason. I know that.

EVE

How do you know?

LISA

Let’s just say a birdie told me.

EVE (a small smile)

Ah. The birdie.

LISA

Do you trust me?

EVE (after a long pause)

I think so.

LISA

I think you and Artimus are being abused. I think Artimus is…suicidal.

Lisa takes Eve’s hand, her eyes bright.

LISA

I let you see my whole body, knowing this. Tell me something real. Just one thing. Please.

Eve swallows, her thumb stroking Lisa’s knuckles.

EVE

Okay. I’ll tell you everything when you’re out of here. I promise.

She glances at the thin hospital sheet.

EVE

Are you sure you’re not too cold? Just a sheet…you should be tucked in better. I’ll bring you some clothes, okay? Some panties, a little sports bra.

LISA

You know my size?

EVE (soft, almost a whisper)

Oh yeah. (She looks deep into Lisa’s eyes.) I know your size, sweetie.

Lisa smiles faintly, and for a moment everything softens between them.

INT. BEN’S OFFICE – DAY

BEN

So. You’re both visiting her.

ARTIMUS

Yeah.

EVE

Of course.

BEN

Pretty sure she’s the one. The power surge confirmed it. She’ll need those injections so she stops fainting.

EVE

I’ll administer them today.

BEN (smiles thinly)

And tomorrow, we get to go on a little trip. Make her part of the family.

ARTIMUS

Let’s go somewhere fun. Spain. Antarctica.

BEN

I already have the tickets.

EVE

Can’t we decide that? Haven’t we delivered everything you wanted?

BEN (tilting his head)

Where would you go?

EVE

I don’t know. But I’ll figure it out by tomorrow.

BEN

Artimus, you did good. This is a time to celebrate. You helped create all this. And now— (he spreads his hands) —we can see the finish line.

ARTIMUS (dry)

Yeah. I’m so thrilled, really. Wow. (glances at Eve)

INT. HOSPITAL ROOM – EVENING

Lisa is sitting on the bed in a clean gown, hair brushed, looking more like herself. Eve enters carrying a folded bundle of clothes.

EVE

I brought you something comfy. You’ll be able to leave tomorrow.

Lisa nods, relieved.

EVE

One small thing—I need to give you two injections. They’ll help stop the fainting spells. All the tests were to get this formulation just right.

LISA

Okay. That’s good to hear.

EVE

Unfortunately…they have to go in your glute muscle. I’m sorry. Might leave a bruise. I’ll be gentle.

LISA (sighs, a tired smile)

Well…no point being shy now. You’ve seen it all anyway.

EVE

It’s okay if you feel shy. But I promise it’ll be quick. Then you can put on your new digs, relax, listen to some music. Artimus will come by tonight.

LISA

Sounds okay.

EVE

The nurse should have the vials by now.

A nurse enters carrying the tray. She sets it on the side table.

EVE

All right. It’s easier if you stand and lean forward a little.

Lisa stands, bracing herself against the mattress, hair falling over her shoulder.

EVE

Here’s the first one—left side. A little pinch.

She cleans the skin, slides the needle in smoothly.

LISA

Ouch.

EVE

Almost done. Bandage…good. One more on the right.

She moves to the other side, her hand resting gently on Lisa’s hip to steady her.

EVE

Ready? Here we go.

LISA

Ow…

EVE

All done. Might be sore later. You okay?

Lisa straightens and turns, a little pink-cheeked. Eve meets her eyes, soft.

EVE

The nurse will help you get dressed. I’ll check on you again later—just me.

She winks, and slips out.

LISA

(quietly, to herself)

Yeah. Just you.

VIsiting Hours At The Hospital

Artimus:

I find it amazing, truly, how you get these right every time. Okay—let’s go until I break you.

Lisa:

Yeah, good luck with that.

Artimus:

Alright. (Artimus stills himself) One: I’m working on a lie detector. Two: My middle name is Henry. Three… (he hesitates) Four: I’ve slept with or had sexual relations with four women in the last month.

Lisa:

The first one is true. The second one is true. The last one is false—it’s been less. But there’s a lot of feeling behind the last one.

Artimus:

I can’t win with you.

Lisa:

How about scanning my mind to help with the lie detector? But I’m charging for that one.

Artimus:

You should have charged for the most recent one.

Lisa:

Yeah, why didn’t anyone tell me that? I need the cash. I mean, isn’t stripping worth something in this town?

Artimus: (truthful aside)

Should be—especially for you.

Lisa: (laughs, a little embarrassed)

Oh my God. I guess I’ll take that as a compliment—even though you haven’t seen anything.

Artimus:

Oh, Eve told me.

Lisa:

No, she didn’t.

Artimus:

So…you said you need the cash. Your powers—or this little birdie flying around—don’t give you any inkling of what your future holds?

Lisa: (growing thoughtful)

So what’s the emotion behind all those women, Artimus? Tit for tat—and I’ll know if you’re lying.

Artimus: (drops his voice, honest)

Eve thinks I’ve been asked to sleep with women for…nefarious reasons. But it’s not true. It’s only been because I liked them.

(A long pause. His face softens.)

Artimus:

Truth is…my biggest crush has always been Eve. Since we were kids.

(He exhales, like he’s been holding that in for years.)

But sometimes I think…the world might be better off if I was gone. If someone like you could find a way—without all this. (He meets her eyes) …Lisa.

(She hears her name, and something deep inside her—the part that only knows how to love in the midst of pain—unravels. It happens again: she looks at Artimus, the one she loved…and she is out.)

Lisa awakens, blinking up at the ceiling. A nurse comes to her side.

Nurse:

You were out again.

Lisa:

Oh God. I remember now. How long this time?

Nurse:

Only about thirty minutes.

Lisa:

(sighs)

Guess that’s an improvement. But still…

Eve enters briskly, wearing her doctor’s coat. She nods to the nurse.

Eve:

Thanks, Karen. I’ll take it from here.

The nurse leaves. Eve draws the curtain around the bed for privacy.

Eve:

So…thirty minutes this time.

She begins examining Lisa’s eyes, moving her finger back and forth.

Eve:

Follow my finger…good. Now look up. And down.

Lisa:

I thought this was going to cure the fainting.

Eve:

(speaking calmly)

The treatment needs more time to work. How are you feeling?

Lisa:

(groggy)

Sore.

Eve:

Where exactly?

Lisa:

All over. But mostly—like you said—my butt is sore.

Lisa shifts gingerly. Eve can’t help but smile a little.

Eve:

Oh, poor baby.

While listening to her heartbeat, Eve meets her gaze and winks.

Lisa:

Can you do something for it?

Eve looks a little startled.

Eve:

For what…the sore bottom?

Lisa:

Yeah. I want you to kiss it and make it better.

Eve flushes bright red and pulls back.

Lisa:

(laughs, surprised)

Oh my God—you’re blushing!

Eve:

Lisa. Do you know how to go slow? I’m trying to give you professional care here.

Her voice softens, but she’s clearly flustered.

Eve:

Just breathe. Get your bearings. Now—let’s try this again.

(slightly stern)

How do you feel?

Lisa:

(quieted, contrite)

My whole body feels sore. And there are black marks where you did the injections.

Eve:

Okay. Turn over—let me see.

Lisa complies. Eve inspects the bruising, expression concerned.

Eve:

Yes…that is a bit excessive.

Eve helps her turn to face her again, looking directly into her eyes.

Eve:

Listen. I don’t know what you and Artimus were talking about, but you’re under my care, and something triggered you. So—no more visitors for now. I’m going to monitor you closely tomorrow. Maybe you can leave in the evening. Understood?

Lisa:

I feel like I’m being disciplined.

Eve:

Lisa. Don’t go there with me.

Lisa smiles sheepishly, caught.

Lisa:

Can’t we just…visit? Talk without all the professional stuff? I promise I won’t…go there.

Eve:

Yes. I’m here to visit too.

Her tone softens as she sits down by the bed.

Eve:

Maybe I can get you some real food.

Lisa:

(smiling)

Good.

Eve:

You’re easy to please, aren’t you?

Lisa:

Yes…once you know what I like. I wasn’t—

Eve:

(amused)

What would you like to eat? And—why aren’t you wearing the underclothes I brought you? Didn’t they wash them? I picked them out so carefully…

Lisa:

I couldn’t find them washed or anything.

Eve walks to the cabinet, opens a drawer, and holds up the folded clothes.

Eve:

They were right here, Lisa.

Lisa:

Oh. Sorry. I do like them.

Eve sits back down, holding the clothes out to her.

Eve:

I thought they might make you feel more comfortable. Not so exposed.

Lisa touches her arm gently.

Lisa:

You were being…nurturing. And I was really touched. But…I guess I’m not the kind of person who feels good about wearing more clothes. I don’t know.

Eve studies her face, her expression softening.

Eve:

(smiling)

Note taken.

Park. Evening. They walk along the path under the trees.

Artimus:

She’s my friend. Maybe the first person who ever really gets what I’m going through.

Eve:

Artimus…like I wouldn’t know? I’m your friend too, you know.

Artimus:

(sighs)

See, that’s exactly what you don’t get. You’re part of my pain.

Eve stops walking. He turns to face her, voice low.

Artimus:

I’ve had a crush on you since we were kids. But you never knew that, did you? I couldn’t ever say it. Because that would make me weak—and weakness isn’t what you want, right?

He looks away, voice tightening.

Artimus:

If I had any real power, we’d be out of this damn cage we’re in…and now Lisa’s stuck here with us.

Eve:

(pauses, searching for words)

We…we don’t talk much about the encounter we had. You know—sexual.

Artimus is silent. She takes a breath.

Eve:

I would never have let you go down on me if I didn’t feel something for you. I had a crush too, but…I didn’t think you’d understand.

She swallows, blinking back tears.

Eve:

I was ashamed back then. I couldn’t talk either.

Their eyes meet.

Artimus:

And now?

Eve:

(in a small voice)

In a way, it’s the same. I’ve been asked to lure people…to do things I’m not proud of.

Her voice breaks.

Eve:

I’m so numb. I don’t even know who I am anymore.

She starts to cry. Artimus steps closer and hugs her, holding her tightly.

Artimus:

I want so much to get you out of this.

His voice is fierce and sad at once.

Artimus:

I feel so powerless.

She leans her forehead to his chest.

Eve:

You know what it’s like, right? You’ve been asked to do things…to lure women…

Artimus:

(quietly)

If you didn’t do it, things would get worse.

He smooths her hair.

Artimus:

You’re a survivor.

They stand in silence for a moment. He draws back to look her in the eyes.

Artimus:

But I’ve got a plan for tomorrow. Something to buy us a little time—to maybe come up with something better.

He hesitates.

Artimus:

Will you trust me? I mean…am I trustworthy enough?

Eve studies his face, searching. Then, slowly, she nods.

They wrap their arms around each other again, holding on like they might never let go.

Ben’s office.

Eve

(smiling, glancing back at Artimus)

So…we were thinking Bali. I think Lisa would love it. Me and her—we’re taking it slow.

Ben

Artimus, you okay with this?

Artimus

(nods)

I’m the one who suggested it. I want a vacation.

Ben

(folds his arms, studying them)

Alright. It’s important Lisa feels like she’s part of a family. That’s what I want accomplished. I also want her comfortable around me.

Eve

I think introducing you on the trip is the best way. Make it seem…natural. Like she’s just meeting my family, the way couples do.

Ben

(squinting, amused)

What am I hearing right now—wedding bells?

He looks at Artimus, who’s smiling just a little too much.

Eve

Honestly…I could go for this one, Ben. I’d like you to sincerely consider allowing it.

She pauses, voice low but sure.

Eve

This is the trio you wanted. Apparently we’ll be doing a lot together. So…why not?

Ben

(slowly)

Why have you taken to her so much? You’ve never come to me about anyone for marriage.

Eve meets his eyes steadily.

Eve

You’ll see when you meet her. She’s…

Artimus

(cutting in, voice soft)

…unique.

Hospital Room

Eve

Okay…I know I keep asking to look at your butt.

Lisa

(smiling)

It’s okay. I get that a lot.

Eve

(rolling her eyes, pulling the curtain)

Very funny, Lisa. Roll over, please.

Eve examines the bruises. They look better. She quietly slips a tightly folded piece of paper into Lisa’s hand as she helps her turn. Then she gently touches the back of Lisa’s neck, leaning in close.

Eve

(whispering into her ear)

Keep this hidden. Read it in the hall bathroom—third stall. Play along.

She straightens, studying her neck as if examining something.

Eve

(out loud, in a clinical tone)

Hmm. What’s that on your neck?

Lisa

(catching on)

I know. It looks weird…like it could be something else.

Eve

(frowning)

Funny. I didn’t notice it until you were lying just the right way.

Lisa

(sighing)

Ugh. I should get it removed.

Eve

(softening)

Don’t be silly. You’re perfect the way you are.

She draws the curtain back, her tone shifting gently.

Eve

I have something to ask you.

Lisa

Sure.

Eve

Me and Artimus…we’re going to Bali for a vacation with family. It would be a chance for you to meet them. I know it’s sudden, but—

(takes a breath)

—we both need a break. Maybe you’ve already noticed that. I just…I don’t want to be gone and not have you around. I’d really like to keep seeing you.

Lisa

(smiling softly)

I’d like that too.

Scene: The Fake Abduction

Setting:

Late evening. Hospital parking garage.

A black van idles, back doors cracked open. Inside, Buzz and two operatives watch a live feed from a drone circling overhead.

Operative 1 (into comm):

Target visual confirmed. Exiting stairwell now.

Eve and Lisa walk side by side. Lisa keeps her eyes down but murmurs:

Lisa (whispering):

It’s them, right?

Eve (quiet, steady):

Just stay calm.

(Floodlights snap on, washing the area in harsh glare.)

Voice on loudspeaker:

Evelyn Park, Lisa Snow, Artimus Renner—hands visible. No sudden movements.

(Two black SUVs roll up behind the van.)

*Artimus appears around a pillar, hands raised, as though he’s just arrived. He locks eyes with Lisa briefly—she understands this is the signal.)

Operative 2 (approaching):

You three are coming with us under directive 218-B. You are not under arrest, but you are in protective custody pending debriefing.

Artimus (sounding convincingly annoyed):

You don’t have jurisdiction here.

Operative 2 (bland):

With respect, sir—none of this is up for debate.

(Flex-cuffs applied, none too roughly.)

Inside the Van

(Doors slam shut. Buzz pulls off goggles.)

Buzz:

All right, everybody breathe. You have thirty seconds to freak out. Then we switch vehicles and disappear.

Lisa (exhales, shaking):

God. This is really happening.

Artimus (calmer):

It’s happening because it has to. You okay?

Lisa (nodding):

Yeah. Thank you for the note.

(She looks at Eve.)

Lisa:

You okay with this?

Eve (voice low):

I wasn’t asked. But…I’m okay.

(The van drives three blocks, turns into an alley. Another black SUV is idling.)

Buzz:

Time to switch rides. Move quickly.

(They all exit and climb into the second vehicle. Lisa sits between Eve and Artimus.)

Inside the SUV

Lisa (finally speaking freely):

Where are we really going?

Artimus:

Out of Ben’s reach. That’s all that matters tonight.

Undisclosed Underground Home

(Buzz has just finished explaining everything: Ben’s manipulations, the experiments, how Eve and Artimus were forced to recruit her. Lisa sits silent for a while, trying to take it all in.)

Lisa:

I can’t believe it. I knew you two were being abused, but this is too much.

(She looks directly at Eve.)

I’m so sorry, Eve.

This is going to take a while for me to process.

Eve:

Let’s take a short break.

Buzz:

The den area is that way. Go take a breather. There’s refreshments.

Artimus:

Let me catch what the media is saying.

Buzz:

Sure. Let’s check it out.

(The girls go to the den. Eve kind of drifts off by herself, picking at some carrot sticks. Minutes pass.)

Lisa:

Hey. What are you doing over there?

Eve:

It’s okay. You don’t have to pretend things haven’t changed between us.

Lisa:

What do you mean?

Eve (chuckling in disgust):

I can’t believe I thought… I guess this puts a wrench in my dating plan.

(She starts to cry.)

(Lisa waits a moment, then walks over.)

Lisa:

I hope it doesn’t. You… No one has ever treated me so well on a date. Why stop now? I don’t want it to end either.

(Eve turns slightly, strokes Lisa’s cheek.)

Eve:

I would have treated you like a queen.

(Eve walks off.)

Think Tank Room – Undisclosed Location

Eve sits slumped on the couch, hollow-eyed, her hands clasped between her knees.

Eve (quietly):

So…is there a way to really break free? Tell me the truth, Buzz. Your honest opinion.

Buzz:

Yes. I can get you time away. But to be clear—we’d need another plan to actually take down Ben’s tech. Your frequency can still be traced. Like I said, I can only buy you time.

Artimus (shaking his head):

We have to take Ben’s technology down. I know I can do it. But even if I did…we’d be on the run forever.

Lisa (softly):

There’s a way.

She rises, steady, and crosses the room. She kneels in front of Eve, taking her hand.

Lisa:

Eve…please look at me.

Eve lifts her eyes, slowly.

Lisa:

Will you go out with me? I want to go back to Ben’s and show you something. You trust me? It’ll be our date.

She squeezes Eve’s hand.

Lisa:

I just want one chance to treat you like a queen. You let me feel like one. Just give me one date to do the same for you. If it doesn’t work out…oh well. I want to try.

She glances over her shoulder at Artimus.

Lisa:

Let me do this.

Artimus (wry smile):

Listening to your little birdie again, are we?

Buzz (grinning):

This is epic.

Artimus (mutters):

Shhh.

The room goes quiet. Everyone waits.

Eve looks at Lisa a long moment, searching her face.

Eve (voice barely above a whisper):

What’s the little birdie saying to me right now?

Lisa (smiling):

You’re a queen too. Stand back…and let me prove it, just once.

Eve blinks, emotion flooding her eyes. A long pause.

She nods.

Lisa pulls her into a hug, and Eve doesn’t resist.

NIGHT

(The doors fly open. Lisa enters first, spine straight, fire in her eyes. Artimus follows—hands in his pockets, deceptively calm. Behind them, Eve walks quietly, chains around her wrists, but her chin lifted.)

Ben (not looking up):

Ah. The Royal Court.

Lisa (even):

No. Just me—and the woman I’m taking home.

(Ben lifts his gaze, studying her. He flicks a glance at Eve.)

Ben:

I see you’ve finally embraced the role—queen in your own mind.

Lisa:

I don’t need a title. Or your permission.

(She steps closer, voice ringing out across the chamber.)

Lisa:

Let her go.

(Ben smiles thinly.)

Ben:

Why would I? She’s more useful to me than you could ever be.

Lisa (steady):

She’s not a tool. Not a pet. Not your leverage.

Ben:

She is under contract.

Lisa (voice dropping to a lethal softness):

Rip it up.

(A beat. Ben studies her with that cold, amused curiosity.)

Ben:

Or?

(Artimus shifts. His hand moves to the tablet tucked under his arm—ready.)

Artimus (calm):

Or I take your entire system offline. Every file, every vault, every resonance grid.

Ben (looks at him):

You wouldn’t.

Artimus (shrugs):

Try me.

(Ben’s gaze moves back to Lisa.)

Ben:

And you think you can protect her from everything that comes next?

Lisa (taking Eve’s hand):

I don’t need to protect her. I just need her free.

(A tense silence. Then, very slowly, Ben lifts his hand and makes a slicing gesture across the air.)

(The shackles fall away from Eve’s wrists.)

Ben (voice dry):

Consider her a parting gift.

(Lisa steps in close enough that only he can hear.)

Lisa (quiet, fierce):

We’re not gifts. And we were never yours to keep.

(She steps back. Eve’s hand finds hers, trembling.)

Eve (voice breaking):

Lisa…

Lisa (soft):

You’re coming home.

(Artimus turns to go but pauses, looking over his shoulder.)

Artimus (mild):

If you come after her again…

(He lifts the tablet slightly.)

…I’ll finish the job.

(Lisa holds Ben’s gaze, her voice suddenly low and almost tender—like a final verdict.)

Lisa:

And my parting gift to you, Ben. You live by the sword, you will die by the sword. You start messing around with Guardian hybrids—especially Sapphire—you’re going down.

(She leans in one last time, her eyes steady.)

Lisa:

If you send your goons to spy on us, you’re going down sooner rather than later. And I’ll know it.

(Ben’s smile falters.)

Ben:

How do you know these things?

Lisa:

I know because my world isn’t about power. It’s about trusting others—and becoming trustworthy yourself.

(A quiet hush fills the chamber—like something sacred moving through the air.)

Lisa (even softer):

You should try it sometime.

(She turns, guiding Eve away, Artimus falling into step behind them. Ben doesn’t speak again.)

EXT. LISA’S APARTMENT – NIGHT

A sleek dark sedan pulls up under the streetlight. Eve steps out, wearing black jeans and a fitted leather jacket, her hair tumbling loose around her shoulders. She rounds the car to the passenger side and opens the door with a little flourish.

Lisa emerges, her skirt fluttering in the warm breeze, a soft cardigan buttoned over her camisole. She can’t stop smiling.

LISA (playful):

Where exactly are we going?

Eve leans in, her hand resting lightly on the car door, eyes bright.

EVE:

Someplace with good music and no rules.

Lisa tilts her head, curious.

LISA:

No rules?

EVE (smirking):

Just…remember something.

Lisa lifts her brows in question.

EVE (gently):

We’re young. Don’t forget that.

Lisa laughs softly, her cheeks flushing as she slides into the seat.

INT. NIGHTCLUB – LATER

Pulsing beats thrum through the dark, crowded space. Strobing lights flash over a sea of dancers.

Eve and Lisa push their way into the middle of the floor, their fingers laced together.

A thumping bass drops. Lisa starts to sway, her hips rolling in time to the music. Eve watches her for a moment—like she’s memorizing it—and then steps closer, hands settling low on Lisa’s waist.

For a while, it’s just rhythm—Eve’s body pressed to Lisa’s back, their movements perfectly in sync.

Then the DJ slows it down.

Eve turns Lisa to face her, palms gliding up her arms to cup her face.

EVE (quiet, smiling):

I’m glad you came with me.

Lisa tips her forehead to Eve’s, their breath mingling.

LISA (soft):

I wouldn’t be anywhere else.

They start to sway again—smaller, more intimate steps.

A harder beat picks up, and Lisa spins away, laughing. Eve catches her wrist, pulls her back in close, lips brushing her ear.

EVE (husky):

You keep dancing like that…

Lisa glances over her shoulder, teasing.

LISA:

What?

EVE:

We’re leaving early.

Lisa’s answering smile is all invitation.

EXT. LISA’S APARTMENT – LATER

(Eve parks again. The engine ticks in the quiet.)

Lisa (softly):

Would you…like to come in for some coffee?

Eve (raising an eyebrow):

Just coffee?

Lisa (shy):

I don’t know…maybe a little more.

(Eve studies her, eyes soft. She lifts her hand to brush Lisa’s cheek, smoothing a strand of hair behind her ear.)

Eve:

Maybe a little…

(leans in closer)

Okay.

Lisa (smiling):

Okay.

INT. LISA’S APARTMENT – LIVING AREA – NIGHT

(Soft music playing. The lights low. They stand together.)

(Eve slowly slides her hand into Lisa’s hair, stroking it back. She steps in, her hand gliding down to the small of Lisa’s back. They start swaying, no real rhythm—just moving together.)

Eve (whispering):

How’s your bottom feeling these days?

Lisa:

All better, doctor. I was in good hands.

Eve (smiling):

Hmm.

(She trails her fingers down Lisa’s front, pausing to glance at her chest. She starts unbuttoning Lisa’s shirt, her eyes searching hers for consent.)

Eve:

Do you mind?

Lisa (flushed):

No.

(Eve skillfully reaches behind, unhooks her bra, and slides it away. She kisses Lisa deeply, hungrily. Lisa moans softly as Eve breaks away just long enough to turn her around. Still swaying, Eve’s hands glide up from her thighs to her waist, up to her breasts, as she kisses along her neck.)

(Suddenly, Lisa’s phone starts ringing. It doesn’t stop.)

Eve (breathless):

You wanna get that?

Lisa:

No.

(Eve’s phone starts buzzing too.)

Eve (exhales, annoyed):

God—hold on.

(She picks it up.)

Eve:

Okay, okay. Calm down.

(pause, her tone changing)

It’s my brother.

(beat)

I see. Just keep him propped up. I’ll be there in twenty.

(hangs up, sighs)

I’m so sorry, honey. I have to go check on him. He’s…he’s going through withdrawals again.

Lisa (soft):

Oh my god. I can’t believe you’re leaving me.

(she smiles, a little sad)

No—sorry. Your family is important.

(Eve gently turns her around and starts buttoning her shirt back up, her hands lingering a little longer than necessary.)

Eve (smiling):

Hmm. Beautiful breasts, by the way. Makes my mouth water.

(her voice soft)

To be continued, okay?

(She kisses her cheek.)

Lisa:

Be careful.

Eve:

I will.

(steps back)

Call you later.

(Eve heads out the door, glancing back one last time before she disappears into the hall.)

PHONE CONVERSATION – MORNING

Lisa (teasing):

I had to get myself off when you left.

Eve (groans):

Lisa…you’re making me feel bad.

Lisa:

I don’t see us waiting much longer, do you?

Eve:

Let’s not plan it, okay?

(softens)

I mean…I don’t even know how you feel about the real me. I’m still figuring that out myself.

Lisa:

The last thing I want to do is rush you. But…God, I thought I was going to combust when you were here.

Eve (voice dropping):

Baby… I just can’t keep my hands off you. You are so beautiful. I…yearn to have you. All of you.

Lisa (smiling):

Artimus wants to play some pool tonight. I know you’re tired—you should probably just sleep.

Eve:

I am tired.

(pause)

Babe… I wasn’t going to say anything, but you’re getting to know the real me. When you’re playing pool…everyone stares at your bottom.

(quietly)

Our first date? I just wanted to spank you and tell you to knock it off.

Lisa (a little shocked, but intrigued):

Really?

Eve:

Yeah. Really.

Lisa:

You acted so cool. So refined.

Eve:

Well, now you know. I don’t like you showing off.

Lisa (breathless):

I…I don’t know how I feel about that. But…the thought of you spanking me…it made me wet.

Eve (voice soft, sincere):

I care about you. I want you to be safe. I mean that. Do you understand my feelings?

Lisa (quiet):

Yeah. I do.

Eve:

Okay. I just…I needed you to hear me out.

(pause)

You two go ahead.

Lisa (smiling):

No spanking?

Eve (wry):

You know, I saw this statistic—thirty percent of lesbians enjoy spanking each other.

Lisa (laughs):

So what’s the verdict with you?

Eve (smirking):

Wouldn’t you like to know.

(softening)

I’m going to sleep now. Good night. Mwah

LISA KNOCKS – EVENING

Eve (calling out):

Come in.

Lisa (entering):

Smells delicious.

Eve (smiling):

Hope you like shrimp.

Lisa (glancing at her books):

Of course.

Eve:

Can you help me, hon?

(Lisa steps behind Eve as she’s tossing the salad. She leans in, kissing her neck, her hands tracing Eve’s curves.)

Eve (breath hitching):

Whoa—slow down. Maybe…help me set the table?

DINNER TABLE – LATER

(Both are eating, the energy slightly calmer.)

Eve:

So…how did pool go?

Lisa:

Artimus beat me again.

Eve:

Did anybody…make any moves on you? Including Artimus?

(Lisa doesn’t answer right away.)

Eve (serious):

Lisa?

Lisa:

Did I mention this is really good?

Eve:

Lisa. Talk to me.

Lisa (sighs):

No—you talk to me, Eve. What is Artimus to you? What’s your history? Don’t I have a right to know that? And yet here you are…interrogating me.

(Eve stands abruptly, carrying her plate to the sink.)

Eve (voice tight):

Interrogation. Like you’d even know anything about that.

Lisa (gently):

Were you…interrogated?

Eve:

Doesn’t matter.

Lisa:

Listen. I’m sorry. “Interrogation” wasn’t the right word. That was stupid of me.

Eve (quieting):

You do have a right to know. Especially if…we’re exclusive. And I still spend time with him.

(pause)

I’m just…too focused on what you’re doing to see straight.

Lisa:

But…why are you so focused on me?

Eve (sitting back down, voice low):

Artimus and I love each other.

(beat)

There—I said it. We…did have sexual relations. I know he still loves me. He probably loves you now too. I guess…it’s complicated. And I didn’t want it to be.

(her eyes search Lisa’s)

Did he…come on to you?

Lisa (shakes her head):

No. He didn’t. He loves you.

(she pushes her chair back)

I’m going to leave now.

(She carries her plate to the sink and turns to go.)

Eve (tearful):

Please don’t leave. I love you.

Lisa (voice breaking):

You love both of us.

Eve (voice raw):

I’m not gonna lie to you. If me and Artimus were dating…I’m sure the feelings would be…like love. Passion.

(she swallows hard)

I’m scared of losing both of you because of this.

Lisa (meeting her gaze):

Then…make love to me. We’ll figure it out later.

(her voice steady)

I’m tired of waiting. If we wait any longer…it won’t happen.

(she takes a breath)

Make your choice tonight about that.

(softer)

And…by the way. I love you too.

(Eve walks to her, her hands trembling as she cups Lisa’s face.)

Eve (voice soft, fierce):

Come on. Let’s go to the bedroom.

(her eyes darkening with desire)

There’s so much I want to do to you. You have no idea.

(Lisa stops her, searching her eyes.)

Lisa (quiet, smiling):

Same.

INT. EVELYN’S LAB – CONTINUOUS

The projected reality flickers out, returning the room to a soft blue glow. Eve sits motionless for a moment, her breathing uneven. Then she rips off her goggles and gets up, pulling Lisa’s off too.

Eve

I need a break.

She turns and walks out of the room without looking back. Lisa watches her go, her expression torn.

Evelyn

(skeptical)

What’s her problem?

Lisa

(quietly)

There are a lot of things that make this… hard to watch.

Evelyn

Like what? It’s just an alternate timeline.

Lisa

Yeah, well… this timeline is more normal. Less crazy.

(she swallows)

It would have been nice to have that. To actually be… dated. Courted.

(she smiles sadly)

Eve would’ve been that. A great girlfriend.

(pause)

I have a feeling she’s going to be a great lover too.

Eve returns, standing in the doorway. Her voice is quiet but pointed.

Eve

You forgot how I went back to my family. Helped my brother.

Lisa

That was a different time. Things were different.

Eve

(sighs)

I have a feeling the next part is going to be… X-rated.

Lisa

(smiling faintly)

Yeah.

Eve

Yeah—and it doesn’t feel right to watch it.

(beat)

It feels… creepy.

Evelyn

(flat)

Well, I’ve already seen the next part.

Lisa

(raises an eyebrow)

And… what did you think?

Eve

Lisa—really?

Lisa stands, more composed now.

Lisa

This is sacred to Eve.

(she looks at Eve with softness)

I feel the same.

(pause)

We should watch it alone sometime. When we’re both ready… emotionally.

Evelyn

(sighs)

Well, I told you both what this process would be like.

Eve

(dry)

Let’s not relive the breasts analogy, please.

(beat)

Besides—I’m not asking.

(she steps closer, her voice steady)

I’m taking the time I need.

Evelyn rises and looks Eve directly in the eyes, studying her.

Evelyn

Interesting.

A moment of silence. Then Evelyn steps back, gesturing to the door.

Evelyn

Well… what are you waiting for? Goodbye.

Eve glances at Lisa. Lisa gives a tiny nod. Together, they turn and walk out. The door slides shut behind them.

FADE OUT.
